Tips for Parenting the Acid-Reflux Baby

Colic should be a four letter word.  Nothing shatters the overwhelming sense of joy that comes with a birth of a newborn baby than the constant and relentless screaming coming from your sweet bundle of joy.  As a parent of two acid-reflux babies, I understand the pain and heartache that comes with colic.  From the sleepless months and constant feelings of inadequacy to the rude comments from strangers (and/or friends and family members), a baby with acid-reflux is a journey only understood by those whom have truly walked the walk and not just talked the talk.  So in dedication to those whom pleas for help often fall upon deaf or naive ears, I’ve decided to take a quick detour from my standard playroom posts to share some of the lifesaving tools that helped me survive two tours in the land of colic.

Eight Essential Tools for Infant Reflux Survival

1.  Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby by Bryan Vartabedian M.D.  Written by a noted pediatric gastroenterologist and the father of two babies with acid reflux, Dr. Vartabedian will provide you with the peace of mind and understanding as to why your baby acts and reacts the way she does.  As you acid-reflux bible, this is the you will quickly find yourself quoting to all your friends, family and even your doctors.

2.  The Happiest Baby on the Block book or DVD by Harvey Karp:  First, don’t let the title fool you, your baby won’t be the “happiest baby on the block,” so don’t feel guilty when it doesn’t happen.  Harvey Karp however, does a great job explaining the innate comforting mechanisms ingrained in newborns.  While these mechanisms may not “cure” your baby, knowledge of them will certainly help you understand why swaddling, shushing and swinging your baby may help them to feel better, even if they are still crying.

3.  BABYBJÖRN BabySitter :  Plan a bake sale, have a garage sale, eat rice and beans for a week, or anything else you need to do in order to afford this miracle chair.  Half baby bouncer, half portable crib, this upright chair will provide you and your baby hours of much needed sleep.  Don’t be fooled by significantly cheaper vibrating chairs, as they don’t provide the necessary incline needed to prevent the acid in your baby stomach from traveling up into their esophagus.

4.  Miracle Blanket – Baby Swaddling Blanket: Quite simply the only swaddling blanket that works.  Other swaddling blankets are either too complex or aren’t strong enough to keep the fussiest babies swaddled.

5. Homedics SS-3000 Soundspa Lullaby: This white machine has it all, three natural sounds (including a heartbeat), three musical selections, a timer, a plug (yeah! no batteries) and even an image projector that gently rotates one of three interchangeable disks.  Even if the rotating disk dies out on you (a common complaint with this model), it is still worth every penny.

6. Everidis BioGaia Probiotic Drops: Many studied have shown that these probiotic drops have “cured” or lessened the effects of acid-reflux in babies.  While your baby may not be cured, you and your doctor will most likely agree that giving these a go is worth a shot.  I used them with both of my babies with varying levels of success (but still success nonetheless).

7. Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat: Acid-reflux babies and infant carriers simply do not mix.  As explained in Colic Solved, these seats place the babies stomach at a angle that allows the acid to dump back into the esophagus.  Britax Car Seats, while pricey, will save you hours of pain and screaming in the car as their seats allow the chair to be adjusted to a higher incline, provide more padding than the standards brands and consistently receive top ratings in crash tests.

8.  An understanding pediatrician: Several different medications are available to help provide your baby some relief.  Most pediatricians are understanding, but some will simply give you the “all babies cry” routine.  If you truly believe your baby is not getting the medications he needs (and not all acid-reflux babies need medication), refer to Colic Solved and/or try another doctor.

Planning on Plan Toys in 2010

Plan Toys not only look great, they are “green,” well designed and above all my kids love them!  From my daughter’s Terrace Dollhouse to my son’s Cone Sorting, every Plan Toys set in our house is a coveted item for parents and kids alike.  While my kids are drawn to their bold primary colors and appealing design, my husband and I are drawn to their durability and educational value.   The newest editions to Plan Preschool line are no exception, from letter and number manipulatives to dexterity building games, Plan Toys has once again topped our “must have” list for birthdays and holidays this year.  While some of the newest 2010 additions are not yet available, continue to check back at UToypia.com for availability.  In the meantime, here is a sneak peak of some of my favorite Plan Toys for 2010:

Plan Toys Tumbling Tower

Block towers are a common place in my house, so this simplistic and eco-friendly design in sure to be a hit in our house.  Tumbling Tower helps kids to learn numbers, patterns, shapes all while building hand-eye coordination and logical thinking!

Alphabet A to Z

Any parents of a preschooler knows that learning letters is often not as easy or as fun as it seems.  This Alphabet A to Z set however, takes learning letters to a new level as it allow children to physically hold each letter, thereby allowing them to study and learn the curves and angles of the letters.  Color matching, animal recognition and directions for writing each letter are added bonuses in this letter learning masterpiece.

Daily Activity Play

Three pattern cards, six wood figures and nine elastic bands.  To the average adult this activity set may not be appealing, but to a preschooler its an endless invitation for hands-on manipulative fun.  Whether they are connecting the family members together or simply experimenting with the magic of elastic bands, preschoolers will quickly be engrossed in this simple, but effective learning tool.

Playmobil Pyramid 4240

Today my son and I put together the Playmobil Pyramid.  A great aspect of Playmobil Toys is the building aspect, as well as being cool play sets.  The Playmobil Pyramid is available now at uTOYpia.com.    We put it together in about 45 minutes (it will take longer for people new to Playmobil).  My 6 year old son did most of the building himself with a little help from Dad!

When put together the Playmobil Pyramid 4240 measures 20.6″ Wide and 13.7″ High.  In my opinion the Pyramid Set is by far the best set released by Playmobil.  There are trap doors,  hidden chambers, burial rooms and much much more.  The Playmobil Pyramid is sure to keep your child entertained for a long time.  The toy is made in Germany and you can purchase it HERE.

Once together my son called one of his friends over and they played with the Playmobil Pyramid  for 7 hours before I had to tell them it was time for bed!  This has been a great purchase and with all of the fun aspects it is the best Playmobil release so far.  We look forward to the new Playmobil Dragon Knight Castle available in the USA soon, but we may purchase the Playmobil Ghost Pirate theme first.

Taking on the Toys: Smart Playroom Storage Solutions

Tired of stepping and tripping over your kids toys?  A smart storage system can go a long way to help tame the mess.  Many toy “tornadoes” in playrooms can be attributed to lack of or poorly designed storage systems.  Bin, bucket or basket storage systems (in which the toys are placed in a removable box of sorts) are the most popular, but in many cases are the least effective.  The ability of kids to “dump” the bins, in addition to their inability to carry a filled bin, or see into in a bin to find or replace a toy, often lead to playroom disasters.  As a result, kids are usually unable to clean up the mess they so quickly created and parental intervention is usually required.  Another popular storage system is the toy chest.  Chests are usually large enough that kids cannot dump them, however their size or depth often prevent kids from finding what they want, which leads to kids digging in the chest or even throwing of toys.  So what’s left?  Vegetable style storage bins are harder to find, but much more functional than bin or chest-type storage.  These bins are enclosed enough to contain the toys without limiting accessibility or blocking the toys from view.  The bin itself is also the perfect size as it is not too big to lose toys or too small to prevent storing larger toys.  The Land of Nod and L.L.Bean both make high-quality wood bins, in several different sizes and colors, that are designed for toy storage.

Oeuf of New York also makes a clever version of the vegetable style storage bin.  With options to have the storage bins flat or tilted and with removable dividers, this storage unit is as clever as it is simple.  The downside to this unit is the price at a whopping $500, but if you have a handy man in the house, this simple design could easily be built for a fraction of the cost.

For a cheaper option, garage storage bins are a good alternative as they are very sturdy and stack-able.  Basket type plastic bins are also available, but are often more flimsy than the solid bins designed for the garage.  One downside of plastic bins however, is that they are much lighter weight than the wood, which can become a problem if your child likes to dump their toys.

Bottom Line: Stick to vegetable style storage bins in playrooms as they prevent “dumping” messes while still allowing kids to access and clean up their toys.

Elves for Hire

Back in the days, the term “Adult Assembly Required” didn’t even exist. Toys and games came assembled and were ready to take on countless toddlers right out of the box. Now days, not so much. In the beginning the “assembly” involved a couple screws and snaps, but has sense evolved into a ten-page-foreign-language-instruction building nightmare. Who knew toys could be so difficult to build? Perhaps that is why Santa needs countless elves to help build his Christmas stockpiles.  Elves are quick, have small fingers and the patience of a saint, in fact everything about Elves make them perfect toy makers.  So much so that I think Santa should go into business renting them out!  Have a birthday party or bat mizvah coming up, no problem, just order an elf.  Is you playroom covered in broken toys or did the baby find the Lego Star Wars battle ship for the 10th time today, no problem, just call an elf.  Have your kids forgotten how to build with blocks or have a tea party, no problem, just call an elf.  It’s a win-win situation for everyone, the elves get to see the world, Santa makes some extra cash and parents around the world get a well deserved break.  So the next time you run into Santa at the grocery store, tell him to ease up on the cookies and make a visit over to my place so we can chat.

“It’s Just a Cold.” Playing the Slot Machine of Medicine.

Today I went gambling.  Not the typical Vegas-style kind, but rather the “common cold” kind.  After a week of non-stop coughing and a runny nose, my yearning for the return of my normally happy two-year-old convinced me that perhaps there was something the doctor can do to help.   With a degree in Microbiology, I am quite aware that antibiotics are useless against the common cold, but I was willing to take the gamble.  Several phone calls, hundreds of tissues and one nasty cough attack later we arrived at the doctors office and headed towards the reception desk.   While practicing my best “thank you for letting me pay your $20 for nothing smile” for the doctor, I ”cheerfully” handed over our co-pay to the receptionist and then took our seat in the waiting room.  Thirty minutes of “Little Mermaid” later our names were called.  As we past through the swinging doors I couldn’t help but feel as if we were unwilling contestants on a game show.  With our money in hand, the doctor examined both ears and listened to her lungs and I felt as if I had just pulled the slot machine of medicine.  “Come on ear infection!  Come on allergies!  Come on anything doesn’t make me look like a hypochondriac or requires me to listen to the ‘antibiotics don’t work on virus’ speech for the 500th time!”  And the winner is…pneumonia?

 ”Excuse me? She has what?”

Pneumonia wasn’t supposed to be one of my options!  All a sudden, “it’s just a cold” were the words I was dying to hear!  Luckily it was a mild case and a week of antibiotics should do the trick, but my “whammy” at the slot machine of medicine got me thinking. I had it all wrong.   A cold is just a cold and for that I should be thankful.  As parents, we all aspire to be the perfect parent who is so in tune to every aspect for our child’s health that we know exactly when they need to go to the doctor or when they just need a good nap.  But the truth is, that sometimes even doctors are not 100% sure what is best for our kids, so why do we expect 100% out of ourselves?  Yes, a cold is just a cold, but pneumonia will always be pneumonia.  So as parents, if means putting our pride on the line and admitting to the doctor that you are not sure if it’s only “just a cold,” then so be it.  After all, what’s more important, a happy healthy kid or straights A’s on your parent report card?

Plan Toys: Three Strikes You’re In?

by Natalie

I love Plan Toys, but I admit our relationship had a rocky start. From the get-go I was convinced we were never meant to be. We had our good moments, as well as our bad, but in the end we hit it off, as any product from Plan Toys will always be a welcome addition to my home.

My first experience with Plan Toys was bittersweet. Within minutes of assembling their Plan City Parking Garage it broke. Urghhh, I was not happy. But after one simple phone call, a new garage was being shipping to me directly from Plan Toys. I came to find out that Plan Toys stands firmly behind their products and are happy to replace any broken, missing or defective pieces, often free of charge. Within days, we received the new garage, which has yet to show any signs of wear after months of heavy play. Things were looking up.

Frustration was the key culprit in our second encounter. Upon spending hours researching the “perfect” dollhouse for my daughter, I came across Plan Toys’ Terrace Dollhouse. Its size, neutral color pattern and moveable walls, windows and doors not only matched, but exceeded my stringent dollhouse requirements. Unfortunately, my joy quickly turned to frustration as I attempted to put it together. It was a pain. The walls and roof of the house kept coming apart before I could tighten the screws. “Ahhhh! Curse you Plan Toys!” Fortunately, within minutes of my “I WILL build-this-by-myself meltdown,” my husband came to my rescue and before I knew it, the dollhouse was complete. Since then, the dollhouse has been anything but a source of frustration. My daughter happily plays with it for hours, giving me time to “happily” work on my construction skills.

The third time around was technically an accident. Upon ordering the Plan Toys Cone Sorting set, I was mistakenly sent the floor model instead of the brand new item I had paid for. Upon contacting the company, they graciously agreed to either send me a new set or give me a hefty discount on the set that I received. Knowing that Plan Toys stands behind their products, I decided to take a closer look at the used set and consider taking the discount. With a simple rub from a Magic Eraser, the scuffs and scratches quickly vanished and that old floor model looked good as new. So without hesitation, I took that hefty discount, wrapped up the box, and enjoyed watching my son open his “new” gift. Score one for mommy (and her pocket book) and one for Plan Toys!

Three times the charm. While my first three experiences with Plan Toys weren’t quite up to par, they definitely sealed the deal. Plan Toys and I are one happy family. Sure we had our moments, but don’t we all? Their toys are amazing, they stand behind their products and the environment and as a result, I am one mom who truly stands behind them.

Martinez Cordones Shoes by TOMS

by Ben

Recently I was looking for a comfortable pair of men’s shoes to take on vacation. I was packing light, so I wanted shoes that I could wear on the beach and out to a fine restaurant. What I found was a pair or Martinez Cordones by TOMS. Made of Waxed Canvas Upper, a soft leather insole, and a durable rubber outsole with arch and heel support. They can be worn with or without socks. I prefer without. Made of canvas but they look really nice when dressed up as well. Almost a leather look to them. Once I found the right shoe I saw that TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. When I read this I also got a black pair. Get them for just $69 at TOMS!

Teething, Talking and Toys

by Natalie

The tooth-fairy needs a new job because she is about to be fired. I have come to realize that she has got it all backwards. Why pay children for lost teeth when you can be paid to give babies teeth? The thousands of dollars spent on Baby Orajel and Teething Tablets alone could buy enough fairy dust to put Tinker Bell to shame. Parents across the world (myself included) would easily pay $15 even $30 to have those first baby teeth miraculously appear overnight. No screaming, no drooling, no stuffy nose cranky baby, just a quick swipe of the credit card. Where do I sign? So please do me a favor, if she happens to be coming to visit you soon, send her my way. We need to talk.
While we are on the subject of talking, welcome to Just imagine’s new blog. From toys to two-year-old tantrums, we’ve got you covered. Whether you are looking for that perfect gift for your grandson’s 1st birthday (you can never go wrong with Playmobil 123) or a new toy to entice your grade schooler off the couch (try Erector sets), you’ve come to the right place.

Shape Up or Ship Out

by Natalie

This is a magical time of year. Fueled by the seemingly endless onslaught of gifts, prizes and presents throughout the year, toy collections miraculously transform into 10,000-armed octopuses, capable of bringing down unsuspecting parents and kids in a matter of seconds. As the beasts slither from room to room, injuries range from Band-Aid worthy boo-boos to broken toes and collarbones. Victims of the Stockholm syndrome, kids often defend the creatures with tooth-and-nail. Parents, meanwhile, feel helpless against the uninvited guest, not knowing how or when to attack the beast. Recent studies, however, have determined the best course of actions to follow upon confronting the 10,000-armed monster. First, limit its food supply. These octopuses thrive on old, unused, forgotten or broken toys. Kid’s meals “toys” in general are particularly dangerous, as they are considered a delicatessen amongst their kind. By removing these hazards from your home (best done at night, while the beast sleeps), the octopus will be forced the look elsewhere for food. Second, repopulate the playroom with the creature’s natural predators, educational toys. The high levels of energy given off by these toys are toxic to the octopuses, leading to their quick demise. Recommended toys include Fractiles and the Sprig Discovery Rig, as their smart design and intellectual prowess are no match for the beast. Introducing these predators during the holiday season, when unused toys reach their prime, is particularly effective in warding off these creatures. Third, be vigilant in your fight. Remove unused toys, rotate old toys or/and introduce new toys on regular basis. Stay clear of cheaply made toys and tempt not the monster with copious amounts of kid’s meals toys. Last of all, stay up-to-date on preventative measures and extermination techniques by check back here, www.justimagine.com, for weekly updates and uTOYpia.com when shopping for toys.
